Time-frequency analysis of EEG signals response due to simple acupuncture stimulation

The simple Indonesian acupuncture is often called GI acupuncture. Mostly, patients of simple acupuncture therapy reported that its therapy could be moved out their symptoms. However, to integrate the simple acupuncture into Indonesia national health care systems, currently scientific research activities have been done. One of activity is to quantify effect the simple acupuncture based on a bio-potential signal. The paper reported our approach in quantify effect of the simple acupuncture on the brain using electroencephalogram (EEG) signal. In the experiment, the basic of simple acupuncture point was applied in three volunteers. The basic points of simple acupuncture have 7 main acupoints that known as 2-3-2 points which function is to neutralize organ dysfunction in human body. These points are the 2 of left and right Tien Ie points, the 3 of left and right Tien Su and Kuan Yu points at the stomach, and left and right Tsu San Lie points. The acquired EEG signal was quantified using a time-frequency analysis, on the certain of time sampling of the EEG. The frequency analysis was applied to determine a power spectral in the brain wave: delta, theta, alpha, and beta. The change of power spectral in the specific brain wave was analyzed as function of time. Further evaluation will be performed, such as symmetrical power spectral in left and right hemisphere, transient effect on change brain wave before and during acupuncture and statistic analysis of power spectra as function time. The results showed that increasing of EEG power immediately after the acupuncture needle was inserting into the body. In the couple of minute after that, the EEG power tends to decrease. For the entire volunteer, during acupuncture stimulation, the higher power was found in frequency band of alpha and theta. This meant that the simple acupuncture have a relaxation effect to the body, as the increased on the EEG power of alpha band was indicated of increasing relaxation of human brain. There were also viewed that the mean and variance of power spectral were decreased during and after acupuncture stimulation.
