Cell phone use while driving: Perceived effects on safety and driving performance

This phenomenon is worsened by the fact that no laws are currently in effect that regulate cell phone use while driving, and the need to potentially operate additional units such as in-vehicle entertainment systems. This study was an initial effort aiming at investigating whether the use of cell phones while driving would impair safety and driving performance. A questionnaire was distributed to a group of respondents (car drivers) who are in the process of renewing their license. The questionnaire consisted of a set of questions that provided information about cell phone use characteristics, and respondents’ perceived effects on safety and driving performance. About three quarters of the respondents admitted that they often use cell phones while driving. Results of the study demonstrated that older drivers tended not to use cell phones while driving. This practice was also associated with respondents who had been driving for longer period of time. There was a strong relationship between the use of cell phones and number of near misses or traffic violations. The respondents typically did not perceive that cell phone use affected safety.
