A study of pléiades tri-stereo satellite imagery for large scale topographic mapping in Indonesia

Currently, photogrammetric mapping by stereo compilation used to fulfill this requirement. In acceleration of this large scale mapping of the huge territory, the usage of high-resolution optical sensor and stereoscopic satellite imagery becomes an option. Pléiades is one of satellite system that provide data within these criteria. This paper presents an investigation of a geometric aspect of Pléiades tri-stereo to produce topographic map at 1: 5000 scale. A study area located in Bandung Municipality, West Java Province, Indonesia, which covers 100 sq km. In order to evaluate the accuracy of satellite orientation, “block” was built and RPC model parameter, tie points and GCPs are used. One hundred thirty point selected on the image and it’s measured by using GPS in the field. Some of them are used as control points and the remaining has become checkpoints. To see a sensitivity of the “block”, several datasets with different configuration number and distribution of GCPs were made and calculated. The rational refinement function used in the geometric correction process. The result showed that the dataset with minimum number of GCPs (4 points in the perimeter and 1 point in the middle) provide similar accuracy to the dataset with many numbers of GCPs. Most of the datasets have ICPs range value within the BIG accuracy standard class 3 for 1: 5000 map scale. Stereo compilation, then conducted to the dataset with maximum control points. Positions of a well defined object are registered and evaluated by measuring them in the field. After this activity finished, the discrepancies from those two measurements, then analyzed and compare with the BIG accuracy standard for mapping.
