The soundscape assessment of three urban parks in Bandung based on the relationship between noise level and activities in urban park

All rights reserved.Urban Park is usually described as a calm and tranquil space where the citizen could perform various activities such as physical, social, recreational, and relaxation. In contrast to the general expectation, urban parks in Bandung area are located next to main roads and thus are being exposed to a substantial traffic noise. However, the parks are still popular and have many visitors. This paper presents the results of soundscape assessment on three urban parks in Bandung based on questionnaire and in-situ measurement. A relationship between noise level, activities, and dominant sound source in the parks were examined. The results of noise measurements in the park show the Leq range from 58-72 dB varied overtime on an hourly and daily basis. An interesting finding comes from the questionnaire results, which shows that the high noise level is not only caused by the traffic noise but also from activities performed inside the park. The level measurement shows different activity pattern on the weekend and weekdays. In general, on the weekdays, people come to the park in the afternoon and on the weekend people come to the park in the morning. A different pattern emerges from one of the parks which are located in the city center. The activity increase in the evening due to the function of the park as the center of activity in the city. Also, there is night food market in that area that makes people come there at night. The activity profile over the course of the day and the week will contribute to the changes in urban park soundscape as well as the dominant sound source constructing the soundscape.
