Environmental impact assessment of steam cycle and combine cycle power plants using life cycle assessment methodology

This paper presents an environmental impact assessment from all generation process in Muara Karang using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The input for this power generation were raw material, energy and water. This input produced electricity as main product, by product, emission, solid waste and waste water. All operational process in industry must be complied with environmental standard and perform continual improvement. There are a great variety of methods for performing continual improvement in industry. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is one of the methods. LCA is an analytic compact of procedures for compiling and examining the inputs and outputs of materials and energy and the associated environmental impacts directly attributable to the functioning of a product or service system throughout its life cycle based on ISO 14040. LCA consist of several stage, i.e. the goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment and interpretation. To make clear the environmental damages and potential improvements, the detailed Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) with direct input and output in the boundary of power plant and also supporting activity. In this study it is found that most impact source comes from sub system (PLTGU). The highest CO2 emission in production is from Subsystem 2 (PLTGU, 72.14%).
