All rights reserved.Cellulose-based fibers are regarded as biomaterials since their incorporation with synthetic resins often results in biocomposites, fiber-reinforced composites, and hybrid composites. However, the limits of the performance of cellulose fiber in polymer-based matrices are mainly due to experienced degradation upon exposure to soil, water, and sunlight. Besides, the low strength of the degradable polymers also limits the range of their applications. Several types of degradation have been recognized in biocomposites products, viz. decay and weathering degradation. Conditions such as moisture, sunrays, and microorganism attacks are factors that contributed to the cellulose fiber-based composite degradation. Decay is the most important and widespread type of degradation and is caused by microbes or fungi. Furthermore, degradation by weather is because of effects of ultraviolet light and water. Both the decay and weathering degradation have caused decreased performance of cellulose-reinforced fiber composites such as changes in physical and mechanical properties. Many attempts have been made to avoid this risk by modification treatment through the matrix resin or reinforcement agent treatment in biocomposites products. This chapter will concentrate on the decay and weathering effects on the degradation of cellulose-reinforced fibers composites. The book chapter also summarizes some points regarding the effects of biocomposite products on the decay and natural weathering properties that are analyzed to find out the effects.
