Analysis of changes in soil physical properties using electrical method as an indicator of pollution distribution in North Jakarta

All samples of soil were taken from two different sites. The first site is along Yos Sudarso Street, and the second site is along the banks of Sunter River. The length of each site is one kilometer, with a spacing of each soil sample is as far as 100 meters. Each sample was tested in the laboratory to observe the value of total dissolved solid (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), and acidity, by assuming that all sampling was conducted on a normal condition of weather. The results of laboratory tests revealed an average value of 118 ppm for TDS, 236 µS for WC and acidity was found to be alkaline, indicating that the area has been a polluted environment. The increase of TDS value accompanied by the increase EC value confirms a linear relationship between both of them. Environmental pollution is interpreted to be attributed to vehicle exhaust fumes and industrial pollution. The pollution pattern tends to increase northward approaching the traffic line, harbor and industrial complex. Results from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the soil grain shape was predominantly rounded, suggesting changes in the physical properties of the soil.
