All rights reserved.Despite considerable recent interest in bamboo construction, design of joints and connections that are able to develop the large capacities possible using bamboo members remains a challenge. Bamboo’s hollow round shape and high degree of anisotropy make connection of members difficult to execute in an efficient manner. Bamboo joints fall into three main categories: (1) traditional or vernacular methods typically involving lashing with or without dowels; (2) modern simply bolted joints; and (3) engineered (usually proprietary) connections. This chapter describes the classification of bamboo construction – specifically connections – providing a review of connection types and the manner by which they transfer forces.
