Preliminary study on Paleozoic and Mesozoic source rocks in the frontier offshore South Makassar Basin, Indonesia

The source rocks of the hydrocarbons has not been established yet. The most likely source rocks in the basin are the Paleogene (Eocene and Oligocene) sediments and, to some extent, the Neogene (Miocene) sediments. During this study, sediment samples collected from some exploration wells were screened for their source richness, type of organic matter content, and maturity. Since this basin is offshore, there are only a few exploration wells and limited rock samples available. The geochemical results indicate that most of the samples have not reached the oil “window”. In order to establish a maturity study in the deeper area, modeling using BasinMod™1D and 2D was performed in consideration of geological and geophysical data. Results suggest that the Eocene sediments are mature up to the “dry gas window”.
