Abstract

This paper presents a numerical and experimental study of single-walled and double-walled square columns subjected to axial impact force. The impact behavior of the columns were numerically simulated using FEM and also verified by experiment s. Here, the effect s of inserting an inner wall to a single-walled column, to form a double-walled columns were evaluat ed. Parametric study f or both types of columns were also carried out. The results showed that, the double-walled column have higher mean crushing force and better energy absorbing performance compared to single-walled column. Further investigation has been conducted on the effect of mass and thickness to the mean crushing force. It was found that double-walled column has a better specific energy absorption compared to single-walled column of the same thickness. On the other hand, the double-walled column that has the same mass as the single-walled column did not perform as good as the previous one. Th e parametric information obtained in this work will be very useful for modern automotive industry in designing front longitudinal members within an acceptable safety level.
