The occurrences of the states as well as their respective durations are assumed random according to a renewal process. The properties associated with the two materials could be drastically different; they are also subject to uncertainties and spatial variation. Satisfactory performance of a system associated with such medium could depend on the spatial average over some domain within the medium. The domain may consist of a random number of nonoverlapping segments of the two materials. Based on the proposed model, statistics of the domain average property are derived. These statistics may serve as inputs to reliability evaluation, including the determination of exceedance probability of a given threshold by some local spatial average property. Extensive sensitivity analysis reveals the implication of probable presence of another material within an otherwise statistically homogeneous medium. Besides application to geotechnical problems, results could be also useful to any problem involving a random two-state medium.© ASCE.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1624528584150{padding-top: 25px !important;padding-bottom: 25px !important;}”][vc_empty_space][megatron_heading title=”Author keywords” size=”size-sm” text_align=”text-left”][vc_column_text]Two-State Medium[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1624528584150{padding-top: 25px !important;padding-bottom: 25px !important;}”][vc_empty_space][megatron_heading title=”Indexed keywords” size=”size-sm” text_align=”text-left”][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1624528584150{padding-top: 25px !important;padding-bottom: 25px !important;}”][vc_empty_space][megatron_heading title=”Funding details” size=”size-sm” text_align=”text-left”][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1624528584150{padding-top: 25px !important;padding-bottom: 25px !important;}”][vc_empty_space][megatron_heading title=”DOI” size=”size-sm” text_align=”text-left”][vc_column_text]https://doi.org/10.1061/(ASCE)0733-9399(1989)115:1(131)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_column_text]Widget Plumx[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1624528584150{padding-top: 25px !important;padding-bottom: 25px !important;}”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
