The impact of damage caused by lightning is enormous. This is due the high density of lightning strike in tropical area such as in Cilacap area in central Java island. The other reason is also improper application of protection systems that caused of damages to tanks and refineries. Analysis of protection systems to be applied in Indonesia, especially in Cilacap area, is carried out to avoid the future damages. This research discusses and analyzes the existing protection system based on standard NFPA 780-2011 standard and compare to the new innovative Free Standing Mast (FSM) protection system with 2 alternatives which use the air terminal with Collection Volume Method (CVM) and without CVM Air Terminal, for the refinery Extended Mast Terminal protection system with Collection Volume Terminal is used.
