Characterization of mangrove forest types based on ALOS-PALSAR mosaic for estimating above ground biomass in Southeast Asia

In order to gain and build a solid understanding of the global carbon budget and ultimately the effects of diminishing mangrove forests on climate change, it is crucial to obtain an assessment and quantification of the spatial distribution of mangrove forest biomass. The objective of this research to investigate characteristics of mangrove forest types based on ALOS PALSAR mosaic for estimating above ground biomass in Southeast Asia. Methodology consists of collecting ALOS-PALSAR image for overall Southeast Asia region, preprocessing, collecting region of interest of mangrove forest, plotting, characterization and estimating of above ground biomass. The result of this research we showed backscattering characteristics on 46 mangrove forest area in Southeast Asia based on ALOS PALSAR polarization HH and HV. We found characteristics of mangrove forest on HH value around -11 dB to -6 dB and on HV value around -16 dB to -21 dB. Based on characterization of mangrove forest, we estimated above ground biomass of mangrove forest in Southeast Asia.
