Abstract

© 2017 IEEE.”Tortuosity” is a parameter which can be used to assess the condition of blood vessels. Tortuosity can be an indicator of the beginning and progression of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), Hypertensive Retinopathy (HR), Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) and Familial Retinal Arteriolar Tortuosity (FRAT). This paper present general description of retinal vascular tortuosity, various tortuosity quantifying methods and its performance consistency toward changes in tortuosity properties. Tortuosity index should be invariant to translation, scale and orientation and correlated with changes in frequency, amplitude, length (composition) and shape of vessel segment. Tortuosity Density (TD) is the best quantifying method because it exhibits expected consistency with every variation in tortuosity properties (spearman’s rank correlation coefficient of 1 (p-value < 0.0004) and standard deviation 0).
